berlin based arttu has been dropping his dusty fat beats across numerous techno labels including philpot, clone and 4lux for a few years but it was 2016’s track ‘hoodies’ on arttu’s own imprint cyblo that caught the attention of accidental label boss matthew herbert (and which remains firmly in herbert’s record bag). arttu was invited onto the accidental jnr roster and has delivered a chunk of techno with so much swing it made donkey kong blush. arttu takes the most simple of jazz bass hooks and loops across a rigid kick, it’s when those hats kick in that the groove goes fucking wild. the presence of us native roberto q ingram on vocals brings a full detroit gangster flavour to the party. initially arttu and roberto had an idea to record a simple and sweaty track with roberto on the mic and arttu at the control of some dusty old machines. the result, ‘bass trakk’ is exactly that: roberto dropping lyrics over a raw beat and a massive bassline. the ep is rounded off with a deep bit of techno ‘debris’ with all the trappings of the darkest hour of a berlin winter in which it was recorded.

looky looky is the new project from jeffrey sfire and ian clark, both residing in detroit, michigan. the pair met in the late 90s when ian was performing as one half of le car with adam miller of adult. ian also recorded under the moniker perspects, and released on clone, ersatz audio and interdimensional transmissions. jeffrey has released a series of singles and remix eps with samuel long as sfire on cocktail d amore music and ultramajic.

munich based producer sven christ releases the sea ep, a jubilant record melding the most groove-laden strands of detroit techno and house. the four tracks for varying dancefloor moments. and combines the warm moving feel of christ s most soulful techno grooves and the diverse innovative production techniques.

fresh from the success of their ‘past / present / future’ release, we march on, with berlin-based italian christopher ledger the man responsible for their label’s 41st release. the ‘percezione and retrospettiva’ ep sees ledger in flying form, as he props up with two dexterous, thoughtfully executed records that speak volume of his ability to craft atmospheric sounds. opening up the release is the sounds of ‘retrospettiva 2’, a future leaning techno jam that again wonderfully fits the brouqade aesthetic. clearly indebted to sci-fi spheres, this one is very much cut from a detroit cloth, with a steely finesse that lurks from the get go. a track that brings the listener on an endless journey, it comes some deep harmonic vibes. all things told, this is an ep of various contrasting sounds, ledger’s debut for brouqade is a stunning example of what can happen when producers think outside the box. the b side consists of ‘percezione attiva’. harmonic, blissful tones abound throughout, made all the more meaningful by a slew of gentle, melancholic piano chords that really pull on the heartstrings. a light and hazy experimental piece, the track forces parallels with other masters of suspense. culminating with a more traditional 4/4 vibe, this unusual turn only enhances the producer’s standing as a man willing to take risks.

this is the fifth release on eye teeth, the techno sublabel of interdimensional transmissions, by it compatriot alstadt echo. alstadt echo effortlessly blends the avant garde with industrial techno influences into his own deeply austere sound, with grainy textures contrasting perfectly against his broken beat structures. the influences are clear, he has even been honored by one - with multiple tunes included on regis the boys are here mix tape. alstadt echo also runs his own detroit imprint known as modern cathedrals, an ode to the concept of cathedrals of sound, the place where this music belongs.

dan curtin s name has long been associated with future looking techno, machine music oozing with soul and emotion. he has released on many seminal labels throughout his career and left an indelible mark on contemporary electronic music. alive / cascade is perhaps a lesser known entry into curtin s catalogue, released on strictly in 1994 and is almost the perfect synthesis of nyc deep house and detroit techno, a true slept on gem of a record. the music contained within the grooves of this record defy any sort of time frame, it s almost hard to believe it s over 20+ years old. a truly beautiful record, alive / cascade is a must for all electronic music lovers and will undoubtedly continue to be played and enjoyed for the next 20+ years ahead. astounding stuff and yet another example of the wide reaching ears and minds operating strictly rhythm during this golden period.

barbir from les points delivers a truly inspiring ep for the 14th release on concealed. the musical range is wide, spanning from detroit flavoured house music and techno, to more futuristic breakbeat stuff with hints of electro. tied together with swirling acid melodies and deep pads, mixed with uplifting beat and bass jams, all laid down over 6 quite different cuts. as a special treat, we find two collaboration with louh on the b side as well... yay!

new underground label abstraxx presents greg son for its first release, delivering 2 astounding pieces of music, clearly influenced by the golden age of detroit dance music. with its raw disco loop and funky bass line ‘rough edges’ has a great house dub vibe. the track builds up nicely adding a subtle abstract spacey-pad and rather unusual background sounds making the track stronger and stronger throughout.this could quite easily become some dj’s secret weapon! while ‘rough cut’ takes a more deep house approach, taking the listener into an intense journey, reminiscent of some detroit dance classics.

though quality techno is regularly associated with the colder climates of berlin and detroit, the recent developments happening on the iberian peninsula have been hard to ignore. one of the region’s more interesting and consistent producers in this decade has been maceo plex, owner of the ellum audio label. armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of signature club sounds, and with an ability to investigate ‘darker’ side of modern life (a tendency that can be heard especially well on past plex-produced tracks like “conjure balearia”), plex has located the “goldilocks zone” between funk liberation and mechanical control. mastering this balancing act is a skill that separates the best producers from the legions of also-rans: it shines through in his back catalog and is back in full force for his new “tesseract” ep on ellum.

seth troxlers agenda setting play it say it label is back with another massive release, this time coming from a group of detroit heavyweights. featuring a lead track from andy toth & billy love, it is packed with essential remixes from chuck daniels, andrés & midnite jackers. andy toth was part of detroit grand pubahs and billy love is a singer from detroit who added vocals to seminal tracks by underground resistance. together they have help their citys electronic music earn its enviable reputation on the world stage, and here billy tells a story informed by his time as a male revue dancer at a legendary strip club called watts club mozambique.

without artwork cover - only standard cover (see picture)...ltd warehouse / backstock - the midnite ep is the follow up ep to delano smith s sunrise ep on third ear recordings, released at the end of 2008. the sunrise ep was one of the underground house records of 2009, and the midnite ep is set to be one of the underground house records of 2010. both delano and us think the midnite ep is better than sunrise. after the sunrise ep, we decided to do it again and maintain the theme and name the next ep after a moment, a feeling within the dance floor experience. we decided on midnite. once again we have selected four tracks from a selection that delano sent us. you can play these tracks at any time of the day or night, and we encourage you to experiment in this way. however, dropping any of these tracks at midnite will ensure that you, your dance floor and all the people in the room will be set up for the journey. :-) a1: a special kind is constructed in the classic style of filtered samples from another record over a fat (really fat as this is a record made in detroit) kick drum. the samples are from ashford and simpson s stay free from 1979 on warner bros records. it is a sign of a good dance music producer that s/he can take an already great track and turn it into a dance floor bomb. delano has done this with a special kind. 117bpm. a2: dee s gruv is a very deep, very atmospheric groove. a crisp snare, a growling bass, a kick drum of varying intensity though the track framing the vibe, and a subtly modulating chord that goes on forever. hi-hats and ride cymbal move in and out of the track as it ebbs and flows. this kind of deep, grooving suspension of time is becoming a delano smith speciality. 122bpm. b1: the exploration is delano working through the same ideas as he explores in dee s gruv. hitting harder and driving faster than dees gruv, the exploration is a continuation of delano s search for the ultimate deep house groove. all students of electronic dance music should check this.
